Content-based material about division for lower primary

Content-based material

Teaching and learning materials are the aids which helps the teachers or facilitators to facilitate his or her lesson effectively. To facilitate my lesson effectively, I have created content-based materials by using PowerPoint as teaching and learning tool because it is the most popular presentation software which is useful and accessible way to create and present visual aids to the learners. To design this materials I have chosen ‘Division’ as the main topic from mathematics subject for class I. The main objectives are let students understand the meaning of division, use the concept of division in the real life situation and solve the division problem. I have designed teaching aids in order to make the lesson interesting and to deliver the lesson successfully. Moreover it enables me to express the intended concepts of the topic efficiently.

Creation of materials (How I have created materials)

I have chosen PowerPoint as a teaching tool for creating content-based materials and collecting all the ideas to create PowerPoint presentation about division. Then I started designing first slide of the PowerPoint by inserting images and started typing the general overview of the topic to show what are the topic that will be teaching for the particular period. To make the slide attractive and interesting, I used images which are related to the division and used animations like wheel, wipe and zoom which are more presentable.

Then I jumped into next slide which represent the main lesson with appropriate examples (meaning, sign and parts of division). In order to design this slide, I have used different shapes such as rectangles, basic shapes and block arrows with suitable background colours to keep the learner's eyes on the lesson as well as for the learners with different learning preference. Moreover I used concrete examples about  division by inserting pictures and motion path animations especially to provide clear concept.

 After designing the slide for the main concepts of the lesson, then I created slides for the activity and started writing activity instructions followed by activity questions and answers for the activity questions. I have framed the activity questions as well as inserted pictures to make the learners more clear about the questions. For this particular slide, I have used different animations such as wipe, bounce, fly in, zoom and split to present my activity instructions, questions and answers for the students.

Lastly I have created quiz which contain five questions using different basic shapes and animations like shape, wheel, bounce and float in. Additionally, I have created hyperlink for each answers (correct and incorrect answer) in order to instill the student’s interest in learning and used applause sound for the correct answer in order to reinforce the students in learning.

When to use?

The materials I have created by integrating PowerPoint presentation as my teaching tool will be used during;

  • lesson introduction to give the gist about the topic.
  • lesson development mainly to teach the main concepts of the topic with examples.
  • conducting the learning activity especially to show the activity’s questions in understandable way.
  • lesson closure in order to summarize the lesson by conducting quiz.

How to use?

Firstly the teaching and learning materials I have created will be used during the lesson introduction and lesson development by showing the topic to give the gist about the division. Then, I will teach the meaning, sign and parts of division. Secondly, during the learning activity of the students I will show the activity’s questions framed in the PowerPoint because I have inserted visual images along with questions in order to make questions more understandable for the students and I have also written the answers for the questions to let students compare and make necessary correction immediately after the activity. To conduct this activity, I will divide the students into five groups to do activity collaboratively and to fulfill 21st century pedagogy.  Lastly, I will use this materials during the lesson closure by conducting the quiz based on this topic to check how they have understood the lesson as well as to reflect or summarize what they have learnt in this particular period.
